Legendary lyricist Howard Ashman is celebrated in a documentary trailer released by Disney+. Directed by Don Hahn, the documentary Howard chronicles the work of Oscar-winning lyricist and screenwriter Ashman, who was the mastermind behind the music lyrics for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and more.

Premiering August 7 on Disney+, Howard offers a behind-the-scenes look at Ashman’s time at Disney and his collaboration with composer Alan Menken, who Ashman partnered with to bring Little Shop of Horrors to life. Covering Ashman’s life, from his childhood in Baltimore to his tragic death from AIDS complications at age 40, Howard features never-before-seen interviews with Menken, Paige O’ Hara, Jodi Benson, and members of Ashman’s family. Kicking off with footage of a recording session for The Little Mermaid from 1989, the trailer for Howard promises to deliver a spelling binding account of the legendary lyricist.

Ashman was responsible for the words behind some of the most iconic Disney Renaissance songs, from “Under the Sea” to “Beauty and the Beast.” He fought to keep “Part of Your World” in The Little Mermaid and pitched the idea of a musical adaptation of Aladdin.
